DESCRIPTION

Eared Seals comprises of 14 species which are divided into seven genera, sometimes called as Fur Seals family and Sea Lions. The term otariid is obtained from the Greek word otarion which means "little ear."

DIET

Otariids feeds on krill, shrimps, crabs, lobsters, squid, octopuses and penguins. A small fur seal weighing about 110 pounds which consumes about 4 to 5 pounds of food for feeding.

BEHAVIOUR

While considered social animals, there are no permanent ranking or statuses that accepted on the colonies. The extent to which the males control females that varies between species. South American sea lions and Northern fur seals tend to drove females, sometimes injuring them, while New Zealand sea lions and Steller sea lions control the space in territories but do not interfere with the movement of the females

HABITAT

Their habitat moved from south and varied in the Southern Hemisphere where most species still exist. Fur seals are considered to be older than sea lions.

LOCATION OR REGION FOUND

Leopard, Ross, Crab eater and Weddell seals live in the Antarctic ocean. Sea lions fur seals lives in the Northern Pacific between Asia and North America along the coasts of South America, Antarctica and southern Australia.
